French Highlights from Costume Couture | 17 Oct

The world-renowned London costume house Cosprop has an incredible archive of historical garments. These include a fascinating selection that chart dramatic changes in French dress from elite 18th-century court gowns and revolutionary republican simplicity to chic 20th-century couture. Film designers have drawn on the Cosprop archive and expertise for several films including Jefferson in Paris (1995) and Napoleon (2023). Join Odile Hughson to learn about the history of French clothing focusing on the French regime changes of the late 18th and early to mid-19th century. Discover how some of the outfits in the exhibition have been designed to tell us about the historical figures who wear them on screen, and discover the Scottish connections with a number of French Royal personalities, such as the daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
