John Bright in Conversation

Join multi-award-winning costume designer and founder of Cosprop, John Bright, in conversation with curator Keith Lodwick, for a fascinating look at his extraordinary six-decade career.

From his early days in the costume industry to founding Cosprop in 1966, John Bright has played a defining role in shaping the world of film, television and stage costume. An Academy Award and BAFTA-winning costume designer, he is perhaps best known for his long-standing collaborations with Merchant Ivory Productions, working alongside fellow costume designer Jenny Beavan on some of the most celebrated period films of the late 20th century.

In this special conversation, John will reflect on the highlights of his remarkable career, his approach to costume design, and the evolution of the industry over the past sixty years. He will share stories from behind the scenes of some of his best-known productions, as well as insights into building Cosprop into one of the world’s leading costume houses.

The conversation accompanies our current exhibition, Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop, celebrating six decades of extraordinary costume-making and showcasing the artistry, craftsmanship and history behind the renowned company.

John is also the founder of The Bright Foundation, a Hastings-based arts education charity providing life-enhancing opportunities for children and young people facing disadvantage.

Copies of Keith Lodwick's book, The Costume House: The Inside Story of Cosprop, will be available to purchase after the event, with an opportunity to have your copy signed by John and Keith.
