Discover the beautiful art of wired-edge stumpwork, a traditional embroidery technique used to create delicate, three-dimensional floral forms that lift away from the fabric and literally stand upright.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll first learn the techniques for sewing beads and sequins, before being introduced to the intricate process of shaping and stitching wired edges to create pliable, freestanding petals and leaves.

Working slowly and carefully, you’ll explore how traditional embroidery can be transformed into sculptural textile forms. The technique has a long history within decorative embroidery and continues to be used in haute couture, film and costume, where its ability to create intricate, dimensional details makes it particularly special.

This is a slow-paced and detailed technique that rewards patience and careful stitching. You’ll leave with your own collection of three-dimensional embroidered elements, along with the skills and knowledge to continue developing this beautiful technique at home.

Techniques: Sewing beads and or sequins, closed buttonhole stitch, stumpwork.

Suitable for beginners and those with some embroidery experience.
