Tapestry Colour Studies: Christine Borland, The Edinburgh Seven Tapestry
Couldn't load pickup availability
The triptych tapestry, created using a combination of traditional and modern materials and techniques, commemorates the ‘Edinburgh Seven’, the first women to matriculate at any British university. The tapestry took seven Dovecot weavers over 4,000 hours and 90,500 metres of yarn to create. Unlike traditional tapestry, the artwork has an organic shape based on a cellular structure in motion. Cotton, linen and nylon yarn and cotton warp create light and shadow, while the nylon weft adds transparency and reflective shine. The piece was unveiled at V&A South Kensington on International Women's Day and is now on long-term display at the Edinburgh Futures Institute on Lauriston Place.
