Tapestry Colour Studies: Julia Chiang, Hold Your Breath and Close Your Eyes

Chiang experiments with the imperfection of the handmade, and the interplay of repeated patterns which reflect her environment through colour and tenderness. This work highlights how the process of gun-tufting with wool brings movement and warmth to Chiang’s ambiguous mark-making. Master Weaver Louise Trotter experimented at length with how to interpret the visual depth of the original painting, which she achieved by tufting tiny dots across the background of the rug, resulting in this vibrant interpretation.
